Valérie Monteil, chef d'entreprise, est arrêtée puis emmenée de force dans un hôpital psychiatrique, ou elle se retrouve internée. Clémentine, sa fille, se précipite chez David Marchal, son professeur de droit, pour lui demander de l'aide. L'enseignant, un avocat qui n'a pas plaidé depuis trois ans, refuse tout d'abord se s'investir dans cette affaire, puis se ravise. Sa fille, Alice, amie de Clémentine, l'à poussé à changé d'avis.
