Perdu et déconnecté des réalités, sans famille, le vétéran Oliver Sherman s’installe à la campagne, à la recherche du soldat qui lui a sauvé la vie pendant la guerre. Cet homme, Franklin Page, depuis longtemps passé à autre chose, a une femme, deux enfants et un emploi stable dans une ville rurale tranquille. A son arrivée, Sherman semble inoffensif, presque maladroit derrière sa carapace. Mais, au fur et à mesure qu’il s’immisce dans la vie des Page, il se révèle en colère, fragile, instable et enclin à une grande jalousie et à un ressentiment profond. La stabilité que Franklin s’était donné tant de mal à construire est bientôt menacée, et la violence qu’il croyait avoir laissée derrière lui commence à réapparaître, planant à la fois sur sa famille et sur la ville elle-même.
