Le film suit quatre jeunes membres d’un orchestre de jazz dans la ville de Kherson, en Ukraine méridionale. Roman, Polina, Nikita et Nikita jouent des standards américains dans un paysage post-soviétique, pratiquant leur art avec ténacité et enthousiasme. Avec profusion de détails sur leur vie quotidienne et un sens de l’humour fin et sensible, le film joue avec maîtrise et légèreté sur le décalage. Fidèle à l’esprit du groupe, cette histoire d’apprentissage brosse aussi le portrait de leur vieux professeur de musique, Sémion Nikolaïévitch Rivkine, bourru mais adoré de ses élèves.
