Monsieur Berthaud, chef d'une famille bourgeoise aisée et comme il faut, dirige une petite succursale bancaire. Impatient d'obtenir une importante promotion, il veut se faire bien voir de son directeur, monsieur Ephraïm, végétarien et franc-maçon. Aussi Berthaud renonce-t-il à la messe du dimanche et devient-il lui-même végétarien. Dans un premier temps, sa fille Roberte n'y voit que grandeur d'âme et abnégation.
