Le publiciste Darrin Hill est aux abois. Licencié par son agence et criblé de dettes, il croit avoir tout perdu, lorsqu'il apprend qu'il vient d'hériter de 150 000 dollars. Mais la vieille Sally, fan de gospel, y a mis une condition : pour toucher le pactole, son cher neveu devra s'établir dans sa bourgade de Géorgie et y monter une chorale... qui devra devenir célèbre à travers le pays.
