A propos du film :

L'histoire se passe en Inde. Solor, un noble guerrier, et Nikiya, gardienne du feu sacré, s'aiment d'un amour sincère. Mais cet amour est misà mal car Solor est promis à Gamzatti la fille du rajah. De plus, le grand brahmane est également pris de passion pour Nikiya. Jaloux il va confier au rajah que les deux amants se sont mutuellement jurés une fidélité éternelle. Une rivalité naît alors entre Gamzatti et Nikiya, éprisent du même homme. Lors de la célébration des fiançailles la Bayadère reçoit un bouquet de fleur qu’elle pense venir de Solor mais un serpent est caché dans le panier et mort Nikiya. Le grand brahmane lui propose un remède que celle-ci refuse préférant la mort à une vie sans amour.
