Le jeune Barack Obama, "Barry" pour ses amis, arrive à New York à l'automne 1981 pour faire ses études à l'université Columbia. Dans un environnement au racisme rampant et où la criminalité fait rage, Barry, tiraillé entre diverses sphères sociales, s'efforce de maintenir des relations de plus en plus tendues avec sa mère, originaire du Kansas, son père kenyan, avec qui il est brouillé, et ses camarades de classe.
