Déjà auteur d’un premier long-métrage, Les Phalènes, Philippe Vallois souhaite mettre en scène le beau jeune homme dont il est amoureux. Mais Johan est arrêté et emprisonné juste avant le tournage. Le cinéaste ne renonce pas pour autant à sa déclaration d’amour filmée et décide de reconstituer des fragments de leur histoire au travers d’une expérience cinématographique unique en son genre, entre docu-fiction et journal filmé. Œuvre sur le fantasme amoureux et sexuel, Johan est aussi un passionnant témoignage de la vie homosexuelle dans les années 70, marquée par une liberté sexuelle montrée sans fard à l’écran. Le film a été présenté au Festival de Cannes dans sa version intégrale mais a dû subir quelques coupes à sa sortie en 1976 pour ne pas être classé X…
