En 2015, sur une colline de Padang Besar, une ville frontalière du sud de la Thaïlande, à 300 mètres du tunnel de Perlis débouchant sur la Malaisie, fut découvert un site d’ensevelissement de corps de refugiés rohingyas. Mystérieuse et jamais élucidée, cette terrible énigme est obliquement évoquée par le récit en deux temps de Manta Ray où un homme blessé, laissé pour mort, est trouvé dans une mangrove par un jeune pêcheur thaïlandais. Celui-ci lui porte secours, l’accueille, le soigne et le nomme Thongchai. La relation grandit (même si l’étranger ne parle pas sa langue) jusqu’au jour où le pêcheur disparaît.
