Le cinéaste Richard Stanley rêve depuis toujours de porter à l’écran le roman de H.G. Wells L’Île du docteur Moreau. Finalement, au beau milieu des années 1990 et grâce à sa force de conviction, il se retrouve à la tête d’un budget conséquent pour enfin pouvoir donner vie à son projet. Mais le rêve va très vite se transformer en cauchemar, sur fond de batailles d’ego et d’intérêts divergents entre l’art cinématographique et son industrie. Sans langue de bois, ce documentaire revient sur l’étendue de ce naufrage : des premiers croquis préparatoires au renvoi brutal de Richard Stanley du plateau de tournage, en passant par les exigences d'un Marlon Brando surréaliste…
