Sur l’île de Chypre, le capitaine maure Otello retrouve son épouse Desdémone. Le lieutenant Iago, jaloux et convoitant le pouvoir d’Otello, sème le trouble lorsqu’il essaye de le persuader que Desdémone le trompe avec l’innocent Cassio… Dans un décor de verre et de pierre, Bartlett Sher, habitué de Broadway, souligne dans cette nouvelle production l’intensité tragique du drame shakespearien. Le rôle d’Otello, déchiré par le doute, son amour pour Desdémone et l’assise de son pouvoir, n’est pas inconnu d’Aleksandrs Antonenko qui en maîtrise les subtilités mieux qu’aucun autre. Sonya Yoncheva, la « nouvelle Netrebko », chantera pour la première fois le rôle de Desdémone dans lequel elle est attendue pour son chant pur et sa grâce.
