Ce somptueux programme mixte démontre la grande vision créative de Frederick Ashton, chorégraphe et fondateur du Royal Ballet. Le Rêve est l’adaptation par Ashton de la comédie séditieuse de Shakespeare dans laquelle le lutin d’une forêt cause des ravages, armé d’un philtre d’amour. Variations Symphoniques a été l’une des premières œuvres d’Ashton après la Seconde Guerre mondiale, et l’une des premières à être représentée par la compagnie sur l’immense scène principale de la Royal Opera House en 1946. Avec six danseurs exécutant une série de quatuors, duos, sextuors et solos des troublantes Variations Symphoniques de Franck, ce chef-d’œuvre séminal célèbre la beauté pure du mouvement. Marguerite et Armand est un rappel magnifique et émotionnel par Ashton d’une histoire célèbre, qui nous est familière à travers l’opéra de Verdi La traviata. Ashton a créé avec succès ce ballet poignant pour Margot Fonteyn et Rudolf Nureyev en 1963.
