Jorge de Sena a été contraint à quitter son pays pour s’installer au Brésil d’abord, aux États-Unis ensuite, sans qu’il ne retourne jamais au Portugal. Tout au long de ses vingt ans d’exil, il a entretenu une correspondance épistolaire avec Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen. Ces lettres témoignent d’une profonde amitié entre les deux poètes, des lettres faites de nostalgie et du désir de «combler les années d’absence par des heures de conversation». À travers les extraits et les vers, s’établit un dialogue qui révèle leurs divergences d’opinions, mais surtout le lien profond qui les unit et leurs efforts pour le maintenir jusqu’à leur dernier souffle.
