C'est en effectuant des recherches pour la réalisation de son film The Bird, consacré à la vie du saxophoniste alto Charlie Parker, que Clint Eastwood découvrit The Last of the Blue Devils, film-document qui dépeint les milieux musicaux de Kansas City pendant les années trente.En 1974 et 1975, Bruce Ricker avait filmé les musiciens de jazz des années trente venus jouer à nouveau dans le local de leur ancien syndicat. Il avait ajouté à ces concerts (réunissant Count Basie, Big Joe Turner, Jay McShann et bien d'autres survivants de cette époque célèbres, comme Paul Quinichette, Gene Ramey, Jimmy Forrest, Jo Jones, Claude Williams, etc..) des documents très rares sur Charlie Parker et Lester Young.
