Caxton, petite ville du sud des États-Unis, dans les années 1950. Un homme en complet blanc descend d’un car, valise à la main, et se rend à l’hôtel le plus proche. Il se nomme Adam Cramer et travaille pour une organisation « à vocation sociale ». Ce n’est pas un hasard s’il se trouve à Caxton, la ville ayant récemment voté une loi en faveur de la déségrégation, autorisant un quota d’élèves noirs à intégrer un lycée fréquenté par des Blancs. Adam Cramer souhaite enquêter auprès des habitants pour savoir ce qu’ils pensent de cette réforme. Cet homme charismatique et beau parleur va rapidement semer le trouble dans la ville…
