Pola vivait à Varsovie avec sa famille depuis des générations. Entre 1944 et 1945 - elle a 27 ans -, elle a perdu ses grands-parents, son père, sa mère, ses quatre frères, son mari (et toute la famille de son mari) à Auschwitz, où elle a elle-même vécu l'enfer pendant un an. A la Libération, il ne lui restait que sa fille, cachée pendant la fin de la guerre et qui avait miraculeusement survécu. Pola est la grand-mère de Natacha, la réalisatrice. Elle n'était jamais retournée en Pologne. Elle allait avoir 85 ans. La cinéaste en avait 27 et voulait savoir ce que sa grand-mère gardait, elle, de ses 27 ans.
