Un grand complexe chimique doit etre construit dans une petite ville. La realisation du projet est confiee au directeur Bednarz, qui a habite autrefois cette ville, ou sa femme etait tres engagee politiquement. N'ayant pas conserve de bons souvenirs de ce temps-la, il est un peu refractaire a l'idee d'y revenir. Mais Bednarz est un homme fort, decide et honnete. Il est convaincu que, grace a son energie, il va construire, sans faire de compromis, non seulement un complexe chimique, mais aussi un site ou les gens vivront dans le bonheur et sans conflit.
