A propos du film :

Dans l'environnement sclérosé et étouffant d'une armée de l'après seconde guerre mondiale postée en France, le sergent chef Albert Callan refoule le sentiment d'attraction qu'il ressent pour l'un de ses hommes. Il parvenait tant bien que mal à renvoyer l'image d'un homme viril, héros de la guerre, en aboyant des ordres à ses subalternes. Mais cette façade devient difficile à tenir lorsqu'il rencontre le beau soldat Swanson. Rempli de dégoût pour lui-même et incapable de gérer cette attirance envers Swanson, Callan transforme ce sentiment d'affection en antagonisme. A tel point qu'il accable Swanson d'agressivité verbale et de punitions injustifiées. Ignorant des sentiment qu'il suscite chez son supérieur, le soldat Swanson en vient finalement à détester Callan et à le considérer comme un ennemi.
