Tourné en numérique, Flower island est un road movie. "Flower Island" est le nom d'une île mythique où tous les problèmes trouvent leur solution, où les larmes deviennent joie. Le film raconte l'histoire de trois femmes à la recherche de cette île, trois femmes blessées par la vie: une chanteuse atteinte d'un cancer des cordes vocales, une femme adultère terrifiée et une jeune adolescente qui vient de se faire avorter. C'est le premier long métrage de Song Il-gon qui avait remporté un Prix spécial du jury à Cannes en 1999 pour son court métrage The Picnic.
