Un dramaturge celebre et respecte, jouissant de tous les privileges des intellectuels, se rend dans la Russie profonde afin de trouver l'inspiration pour ecrire une piece sur le Prince Igor. La il rencontre Sacha, jeune intellectuelle qui se passionne pour un poete paysan mort sans gloire. Ce personnage seduit le dramaturge. Il pourrait etre le pretexte a un nouveau depart et surtout le moyen de plaire a Sacha. Mais il va decouvrir, chez la jeune fille, un secret qui le remettra en question.
