Quand Martin revient a Haven, petite ville côtière anglaise, après neuf ans passés en prison, son ancienne petite amie, Helen, fréquente Bob, l'animateur de la radio locale. La jeune femme s'est également liée d'amitié avec Honda, un jeune refugié muet et passionné par le monde qui l'entoure. Il enregistre tout: la mer, les voix, les atmosphères.
