Dans un petit village du Nord de la France, Hippolyte Lemoine est connu de tous : trentenaire un peu naïf qui n'a pas fait grand chose de sa vie, il hérite d'un restaurant "Le trou Normand" à la mort de son oncle. Il y a cependant une condition à ce legs : Hippolyte doit passer son certificat d'études. Les choses se compliquent lorsque sa tante, belle-soeur et maîtresse du défunt, jalouse de son neveu, tente tout pour le faire échouer. Mais Hippolyte peut compter sur ses amis : le maire, l'instituteur et la fille de ce dernier dont il tombe amoureux...
