Jean, ouvrier radio-électricien établi à son compte, vit avec sa femme Thérèse, sa belle-mère, sa belle-soeur, Annie, et son fils, François, un garçon de huit ans, rieur et fûté. Aujourd'hui c'est le premier Mai; ce sera aussi la venue d'un petit frère pour François...ou d'une petite soeur. Mais le séjour en clinique est coûteux et Thérèse veut accoucher chez elle. Jean "débarrase le plancher" : excellente occasion d'emmener François à un match de football, comme on le lui a promis depuis longtemps. Jean et François partent comme convenu, alors qu'Annie invente une permanence aux P.T.T. où elle travaille pour rejoindre Gilbert, le compagnon de Jean, qu'elle aime et qui l'aime, pour aller au bal champêtre.
