A propos du film :

Une claire matinée d'hiver dans le nord de la Chine. Song et Tang ont une rude journée devant eux, dans l'une des nombreuses mines de charbon de la région. Chaolu, le frère de Tang, arrivé là depuis quelques jours, les accompagne. Au fond du puits, c'est le drame : Song et Tang tuent Chaolu à coups de pioches. Ils provoquent ensuite l'effondrement de la mine et quittent sains et saufs le lieu de "l'accident". Simulant un profond chagrin dû au décès du frère, ils exigent du propriétaire de la mine le paiement d'une indemnité, faute de quoi ils préviendront les autorités de l'accident. De crainte que l'on découvre l'exploitation illégale de sa mine, le propriétaire satisfait à leurs exigences. Après avoir encaissé l'argent qu'ils envoient à leurs familles, ils se mettent en quête de leur prochain "parent"...
