En 1973, Hueyin, d'origine Hong-Kongaise, est une jeune journaliste à Londres. Le mariage de sa soeur la ramène à Hong-Kong où elle retrouve Aiko, sa mère. Les retrouvailles sont orageuses. La jeuen femme se remémore son enfance passée en Chine. Elle accompagne sa mère lorsque celle-ci décide de retourner dans sa terre natal: le Japon. Aiko raconte à sa fille que son père était un soldat chinois rencontré en Mandchourie, lors de la débâcle du Japon. Hueyin revient à Hong-Kong, mais veut faire un dernier voyage en Manchourie pour revoir ses grands-parents qu'elle aimait tant. La famille s'est appauvrie et porte désormais tous ses espoirs en Hueyin.
