En 1958, dans la ville de Ceduna, perdu au fin fond du désert australien, le corps d’une fillette de neuf ans est retrouvé, elle a été violée et battue à mort dans une grotte sur le bord d’une plage. Très rapidement, Max Stuart, un vagabond, alcoolique et métis aborigène est amené à signer des aveux complets. Sa condamnation et pendaison semblent inévitables. C’est alors qu’on annonce à David O’Sullivan, jeune avocat idéaliste et fougueux, qu’il n’a pas de chance car il vient d’être commis d’office pour défendre Max Stuart. Avec l’aide du jeune Ruppert Murdoch, qui ne tardera pas à se faire un nom dans le monde des média grâce à son journal l’Adélaïde News, O’Sullivan et sa collègue Helen s’embarque dans un combat inégal contre un monde fermé, des preuves escamotées et le pouvoir de l’Establishment. Ils amèneront le combat jusqu’à la plus haute instance du Commonwealth. Une lutte qui va provoquer des conséquences profondes pour eux-mêmes et la société australienne.
