Qalli et Aivaaq, deux adolescents de la communauté Iñupiaq, mènent une vie sans histoire dans une petite ville isolée du nord de l’Alaska. Un matin tôt, ils décident de partir à la chasse aux phoques avec James, un de leurs amis. Une dispute éclate entre les trois garçons et se termine par la mort accidentelle de James.
