Bombay Beach suit l'histoire de trois protagonistes. On y raconte d'une part le procès de Benny Parrish, un jeune garçon atteint de troubles bipolaires, d'une autre la fugue de Ceejay Thompson, un adolescent noir footballeur en herbe qui se réfugie à Bombay Beach. Et enfin le récit de Red, un ouvrier ravagé par le travail. Ces trois portraits vont former ensemble un triptyque par le biais duquel chacun d'entre eux va mettre en scène son imaginaire, ses introspections.
