L'infirmière Anne Lee s'accuse elle-même de la responsabilité de mort d'un patient, décédé suite à une négligence. C'est en fait, sa soeur Lucy, infirmière elle aussi, qui a commis l'irréparable faute. Anne perd son emploi et en obtient un nouveau dans un hôpital particulièrement mal équipé du pays. Elle tombe amoureuse de son supérieur, le docteur Prescott, qui est aux prises avec M. Bowley, le président du conseil de l'hôpital, et qui rend aussi la vie dure à Anne. Mais alors une épidémie virulente commence...
